The popular NFT project Pudgy Penguins has announced the upcoming alpha launch of Pudgy World, a Web3 game built on the Ethereum Layer 2 network zkSync Era. The alpha is set to debut in Q1 of 2024, marking a shift from NFT collectibles to a comprehensive entertainment and lifestyle brand.
Players will have the opportunity to explore an open world, customize their penguin characters, engage in story-driven quests, and interact with other players. The alpha will combine entertainment IP with zero-knowledge (ZK) blockchain technology, paving the way for wider adoption of Web3 technology.
To ensure the game's success, the team sought a reliable, accessible, and scalable blockchain platform. SVP of Growth at Matter Labs, Michael Lee, highlighted how Pudgy World utilizes zkSync's ZK technology to introduce new business models and gaming experiences, akin to the gaming industry's shift to mobile games.
The team emphasizes that Pudgy World is an immersive digital environment accessible to Pudgy Penguins NFT holders, Pudgy Toy owners, and all gamers seeking adventure. While players are not required to own an NFT or purchase a toy to access the alpha version of Pudgy World, holders may receive certain benefits.
Each Pudgy Penguin toy includes a QR code that, when scanned, allows the owner to claim unique traits for their digital Forever Pudgy Penguin character in the game. Additionally, all toys are linked to existing NFT IP, ensuring that current NFT holders receive licensing royalties for each corresponding toy.
